REFLEXOLOGY

What is Reflexology?

Healing using the feet is thought to date back 4,000 years to the time of the Ancient Egyptians. A picture was found in an ancient tomb which looks very like someone giving a foot massage or reflexology treatment. The ancient Chinese are also known to have used reflexology in conjunction with acupuncture. Modern reflexology is based on the study of zone therapy, which was popularised by Dr William Fitzgerald in the nineteenth century. He found that by applying pressure to key points on the feet he could bring about healing in other parts of the body. A physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, was influenced by Fitzgerald’s work and introduced reflexology in its modern form into her physiotherapy department. She was so impressed by the results that she left the hospital where she worked and set up her reflexology practice in the 1930’s.

Reflexology can be seen as working both on both energetic and physical levels. On an energetic level Reflexology is based on the idea that certain points on our feet – reflex points – are connected energetically to other parts of our body. By massaging these points the energy can be encouraged to flow more smoothly and various physical and emotional conditions can be treated. The physical explanation for reflexology focuses on the nervous system. According to this theory, pressure applied to the feet generates a signal through the peripheral nervous system. The signal then enters the central nervous system and is relayed to the internal organs. Here it controls the necessary adjustments in fuel and oxygen. A signal is also sent to the motor system, where it adjusts the body's tone and tension level.

There are reflex points in other areas of our body, such as hands and ears, but most reflexologists in the UK will work on your feet.

What is a Reflexology session like?

The client remains clothed other than removing socks and shoes. It takes place lying down on a treatment couch or in a reclining chair. The feet are cleansed at the start of the treatment and then a variety of techniques are used to massage the feet and work on the reflex points. The treatment is generally very relaxing and the therapist will adjust the pressure and treatment according to the individual client needs.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

One of the most important benefits is stress relief, relaxation and helping to restore a feeling of well being. It has also helped conditions such as depression, arthritis, asthma, back pain, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, fertility, digestive disorders, insomnia, migraines, and circulatory problems.
