BUDDHISM
'Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, appeared in this world in 624 BC. Just as doctors give different medicines for people with different illnesses, so Buddha gave different teachings for people with different problems and capacities. In all, he gave 84,000 different types of teaching, or Dharma.'
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The New Meditation Handbook
Since the time of Buddha right up to the present day his followers have been practising the methods he taught, applying his teachings to their own lives and in this way have been able to solve all their daily problems and experience greater and greater levels of inner peace and contentment.
Buddhist practice is not difficult or complicated; we simply need to understand how at present all of our suffering and problems are dependant upon negative or deluded states of mind and that if we want to become free of suffering and problems we first need to learn how to control and transform our mind. The final result of such a practice is that we ourselves can become a Buddha, an enlightened being, with tremendous capacity to help and benefit others.
Throughout their practice Buddhists rely upon, or go for refuge to, the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha – the community of practitioners. These three jewels (so called because of their preciousness) are sometimes compared to a doctor, medicine and nurses. Just as a doctor will prescribe medicine to cure us of sickness and nurses will care for us through our recovery; so too Buddha, the supreme spiritual doctor, prescribes the medicine of Dharma to cure us of our inner pain and we can receive care and support from our Sangha community.
